This Column is the continuation from the previous one.

PRECIPITATION
RAIN
狐の嫁入り
1) I always feel it is strange when we have a light rain while the sun is shining.
2) There is no need to hurry indoors. Although it is raining, the sun is still shining.
夕立
3) At this time of the year, you should not be surprised to have a sudden evening shower.
4) We were out sailing in a small boat when a squall hit us.
春雨
5) I did not mind my hair getting wet as I walked in the spring rain.
6) In spring we often have light drizzles.
霧雨
7) This is not real rain. It is just a light drizzle.
8) I love to walk in a fine misty rain like this.
村雨
9) You won't need your umbrella. This is nothing more than a passing shower.
10) Don't worry. This rain shower will soon move away.

WINTER

109. Weather words (1)

Weather is certainly part of our daily lives, and is also a very large part of daily conversation. In this Column and the following one, I will give a list of Japanese weather words, together with example sentences.

Some of these expressions might seem special to Japan, but I hope that readers will notice that they are quite easy to translate into English.

TIME OF DAY
日の出
1) I always get up before sunrise.
2) We went along to the beach to see the sun come up.
日の入り
3) We were lucky enough to see a beautiful red and golden sunset.
4) At this time of the year the sun sets at about half-past six.
朝焼け
5) When we woke up there was a red sky at dawn.
6) The glow of dawn was really beautiful.
黄昏
7) It is still dusk -- not really night-time.
8) Twilight in summer is my favourite time of the day.

SKY
鱗雲
9) In autumn, we often see a mackerel sky like this.
10) The cirrocumulus clouds formed a mackerel sky.
澄み渡る
11) As we stood on the top of the mountain, we could see for many miles because of the perfectly clear air.
12) I stood in wonder and looked up at the azure sky.
台風一過
13) The typhoon has passed, so tomorrow it should be a fine, sunny day.
14) On the day after the typhoon the sky was clear and blue, and you could not see a cloud.
朝霧
15) The whole countryside seemed to be hidden in the morning mist.
16) The morning sun soon dispersed the mist.
朝雲り
17) It has been rather cloudy in the mornings recently.
18) The sky was at first cloudy, but as the day went on the clouds disappeared.

19) By the look of the sky, I think the weather is not going to get any better.
20) The sky looks very threatening this morning.
